Well-Being for Life & Learning Initiative
Through our Well-Being for Life and Learning initiative, the Resilience Lab aims to support instructors in designing learning environments that promote well-being. Our new guidebook includes a combination of research, best practices, and personal testimony tailored to supporting the whole student. The guidebook’s Foundations for Advancing Student Well-Being serve as the framework for this resource and include teaching for equity and access, building resilience coping skills, nurturing connection, and connecting to the environment. This framework promotes core skills and mindsets of social and emotional learning and draws on best practices modeled at other institutions. Learn more.
Be REAL
The Resilience Lab is partnering with the Center for Child and Family Well-Being to offer Be REAL to students, staff, and instructors at the UW. Be REAL (REsilient Attitudes and Living) is a six-week program that promotes well-being. It equips participants with cognitive behavioral skills to manage emotions and cope with challenging situations, mindfulness skills to strengthen self-awareness, and practices that encourage compassion for themselves and others. Each weekly Be REAL session is 90 minutes and includes group discussions, partner activities, and guided contemplative practices. Questions? Email bereal@uw.edu.
Seed Grants
In partnership with the Campus Sustainability Fund, the Resilience Lab awards seed grants to support students, instructors, and staff who are working to promote resilience, compassion, and sustainability at the UW. These small grants have been used to fund impactful projects that build connection and community across all three campuses. The 2021 Resilience and Compassion Seed Grant application cycle is now open; the deadline to apply is April 30, 2021. Students, instructors, and staff can apply here. Questions? Email uwrlcoordinator@uw.edu.
Fail Forward
Fail Forward is an event that brings the personal stories of prominent UW faculty, coaches, administrators, and notable community members to the forefront. These leaders share stories of failures and setbacks that they have faced throughout their careers and describe how those experiences have shaped them personally and professionally.
Research Partnerships
The Resilience Lab partners with UW instructors, staff, and students to research themes of resilience and well-being and to collaborate in implementing research-based programs. Current partnerships include the Center for Child & Family Well-Being and the UW EXP Study. In addition, the Resilience Lab is conducting a longitudinal study about undergraduate student well-being at the UW.
