Suicide Intervention Program

The Suicide Intervention Program (SIP) works to reduce the risk of self-harming behaviors. By reaching out to students who are referred to SIP, our goal is to help establish a connection to a supportive resource such as Hall Health, the Counseling Center, or an off-campus provider. This program is not designed to intervene in an emergency (always call 911 if there is imminent risk or danger). This program connects students to services who may be struggling to connect on their own or who may be in need of outreach and support. To make a referral email: lwsip@uw.edu

Checking in with someone who may be suicidal

If you think a friend or student is considering suicide, stay calm, but take your concerns seriously. It is important to consult with others before and after talking to someone about suicide. The Counseling Center and Hall Health are available to provide consultation during regular business hours. After hours and on the weekend, SafeCampus can support you in considering your next steps and provide coaching on how to ask about suicide.

5 steps you can take if you are concerned for someone:

  • Ask: “Are you thinking about suicide” “How can I help”
  • Keep Them Safe: Ask: “Do you have a specific plan?” “Do you have access to your planned method?”
  • Be There: When concerned stay physically present with someone or continue talking or texting with them.
  • Help Them Connect:
    • If you think someone is in immediate risk call 911.
    • If you are not sure what to do call SafeCampus to determine next steps.
    • Let them know about resources that are available to them.
  • Follow Up: Follow up with someone to see how they are doing. Leave a message, send a text or ask to meet in person to check-in.
